Dress code changes coming to OKCPS

A clothing ban in Oklahoma City Public Schools is being lifted for 60 days on college and professional apparel.

The district's "School Dress Code Regulation" prohibits students from wearing "clothing bearing the names or emblems of all professional and collegiate teams with the exception of Oklahoma colleges and universities."

Now, school officials say they are suspending that regulation for 60 days until a new code can be created.

In all, 17 schools in the Oklahoma City Public School District will be impacted by the change.

The district dress code was last updated in 2005 in cooperation with the Oklahoma City Police Department Gang Task Force.

The code was created in response to national concerns about gangs using clothing from sports teams as membership identification.

The superintendent says the committee will review the policy and make any recommendations to the district administration and Board of Education.

The schools that will be affected include:

  • Bodine Elementary
  • Edgemere Elementary
  • Eugene Field Elementary
  • Green Pastures Elementary
  • Hayes Elementary
  • Hillcrest Elementary
  • Kaiser Elementary
  • Linwood Elementary
  • Pierce Elementary
  • Prairie Queen Elementary
  • Southern Hills Elementary
  • Willow Brook Elementary
  • Wilson Elementary
  • Classen School of Advanced Studies
  • Pathways Middle College
  • NW Classen High School
  • Southeast High School

There are no middle schools on the list since all of those schools have a uniform policy.
