Deer Creek student gets perfect ACT score

EDMOND, Okla. – More than 1.5 million students took the ACT test in 2012; only 781 got a perfect score.

That number includes a sophomore at Deer Creek High School in Edmond.

Sooraj Boominathan scored a perfect 36 on his ACT last year.

He just received the results over holiday break.

The teen thought he would try out the test early so he could build on his score over the next couple of years.

Little did he know he would get it on the first try.

Lawmakers want “parent trigger” law for schools

OKLAHOMA CITY – Two Oklahoma lawmakers want parents to have the power to force dramatic change in their students’ under-performing schools.

Senator David Holt (R – Oklahoma City) and Senator Jabar Shumate (D – Tulsa) authored Senate Bill 1001.

The bill would create a process where if a majority of parents in an under-performing school sign a petition, they may transition the school to a charter school, or they may ask for the administrators of the school to be terminated.

The bill states an “under-performing” school has received a ‘D’ or an ‘F’ for at least the last two years under Oklahoma’s new grading system, or a ‘D’ or an ‘F’ for two of the last three years, as long as the most recent grade was a ‘D’ or an ‘F’.

If parents choose to make it a charter school, the school will first serve all students in previous attendance boundaries of the school.

School district report cards released

OKLAHOMA CITY – We’ve talked about them numerous times, but now those A-F Report Cards on each district in the state are available for anyone to take a look.

Here in the metro, the district grades range from A to D.

Edmond, Deer Creek and Bethany all came out with an “A.”

Norman and Moore both came out with a “B.”

Mid-Del and Putnam City districts both received a “C.”

Oklahoma City is at the bottom with a “D.”

Maridyth McBee, with the Department of Education, said, “We’re very proud of it. It took a lot of blood sweat and tears on everyone’s part.”

The grades are out and school districts are now looking ahead.

Sandra Parks, deputy superintendent with Oklahoma City Public Schools, said, “It’s bothersome to us but we already have a plan in place.”
